Berlin - Thursday

We have made it to Berlin.

We are in East Berlin in Mitte area, 30m from nearest Metro at RosenthalerPlatz. The first thing you need to know about German street number is they start from 1 on the right side of the street, and progress along that side then continue to rise coming back down the left side, so on one side is 3 and opposite side of the street is 184. Not good if looking for 8 and you see 175 on the other side.
Lots of restaurents and cafes in that area.  Most of the houses tall and plain to look at outside, but if they are like our apartment they are nice and big inside.

Thursday 9th June we wandered in to the Berliner Dom.
It has been restored and it is great. Fantastic inside,

Then you can go up the stairs and walk around the cupola -  base of the dome. Fantastic views over Berlin.

We got on the hop on/off bus.  This one is the best I have been on in that it doesn't move to fast so you can actually get some photo's. It also stops at a couple of spots for time for photos.
We stopped at the Brandenburger Gate for a good look around

Then walked to the Jewish Memorial - Denkmal fur Die ermordoken Juden Eurogas - 2711 blocks of different sizes to memorialise the murder jews in europe.  Very moving , except for the idiots jumping from block to block

Back on the bus to Checkpoint Charlie, which while there is a replicate created by enterprising people to get tourists to pay for photo's there is really nothing left, though there is a museum nearby

We walked out a couple of blocks and found an interesting restaurent with the local foods where we enjoyed lunch with the locals.

Back a block from Checkpoint Charlie is a bit of the original WALL

and next to it in the foundations of the Gestapo building is the Topographie des Terrors which documents the holocaust and other persecutions in Germany.

Across the road is where you can have a balloon ride, or drive in an old German car or bike.

Beer and icecream in the Hackesche Markt listening too a brass band busking,

wrapped in blankets at the outdoor cafe because of the cold win
